Stacey Schmuhl joined the Buford family this year as the new Head Competition Cheerleading coach. Coach Schmuhl comes to Buford after many years at Ola High School in Henry County, and brings with her a very impressive resume including being named 2019 Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association (GCCA) Coach of the Year, 7 region championships, 3 state runner ups, and three 3rd place finishes at state.

Buford Athletics sat down with the new Competition Cheerleading coach to see how she is adjusting to Buford and how the season is going so far for her.

Buford Athletics: Coach Schmuhl thank you for talking with us today, and congratulations on taking over as Head Competition Cheerleading coach at Buford High School. First and foremost, how has the transition to Buford, GA been for you and your family?

Coach Schmuhl: Relocating after 20 years in the same community has been exciting, challenging, easy, and hard all at the same time.  Selling a house and building has been our biggest challenge but everyone in the community has been very welcoming and supportive in our transition.  Now that our house is done we are excited to settle in as residents of the community.

Buford Athletics: So, you and your family are settling in now and you are getting more comfortable at Buford. Now let’s talk cheerleading. How has the season been going so far?

Coach Schmuhl: We have been working hard all summer and we have our first competition September 14th at North Gwinnett.  We are really excited to finally get to compete and show everyone what we have been working on.

Buford Athletics:  Obviously you put a lot of time and effort into coaching cheerleading, and there is more to being a varsity head coach than just coaching technique and routine. Despite all of those outside factors, what is the most rewarding part of coaching competition cheerleading?

Coach Schmuhl:  We work really hard for 2:30 minutes and the feeling of watching them perform and enjoy themselves is like nothing else.

Buford Athletics: Who were some influential coaches in your life? How did they help shape who you are today as a person and as a coach?

Coach Schmuhl: The coach that has had the biggest impact on me is in my adult life.  I participate in Crossfit and my Crossfit Coach in Henry County, Chris Snipes, has impacted me the most.  After a major surgery and closing in on 40 I was struggling with my health and he helped me to not only get back in shape but to be in the best shape of my life and he helped me to accomplish things I had never done in my life.  He taught me the importance of mental toughness and that you are capable of much more than you even think possible.  I have used so many things he has taught me in my coaching now that I learned from him.

Buford Athletics:  What are your expectations as head coach for the 2019 season?

Coach Schmuhl: We are trying to build a culture of hard work, commitment and an expectation of high levels of execution in all skill areas.

Buford Athletics: What can the Buford community expect from your cheerleaders this year (in the classroom/out in the community/performance)?

Coach Schmuhl: The 2019 cheerleaders are hard workers on and off the mat.  Buford can expect to see them working to build a culture of excellence in cheer for future Wolves, and in life skills that will follow them after they hang up their cheer shoes.

The Buford Competition Cheerleading’s first competition is this weekend (9/14) at North Gwinnett High School. Go Wolves!
