Varsity XC Boys and Girls head to State

8 AAAAA Region Meet, Unicoi State Park, Helen GA

Wednesday, October 23rd      A beautiful afternoon with temperatures in the high 60’s welcomed the Region 8-AAAAA runners to Unicoi State Park on Wednesday afternoon. The all-natural surface, rolling hills, and spectator friendly venue is a favorite among our athletes and they came ready to compete. After many PR’s and other note-worthy performances, both the Varsity Buford boys and girls XC teams are heading to Carrollton next week for the state meet.

Girls Varsity: Our girls brought home a 2nd place region finish and we could not be more proud of their performance. Sophomore Carolyn Calzada led the way, taking  3rd place overall with a time of 21:01. Senior Jordan Sullivan was only a few steps behind with a 4th place finish and a time of 21:05. Freshman Hayden Bailey (22:28), Caroline Montini (23:08), and Junior Mikayla Frierson (23:21) finished strong and fought hard against the fast pace set by the front, nearly upsetting  the favored first place Loganville team. The final score differential between the two teams was only 6 points. Rebeka Miranda 24:08  and Leah Madsen 24:35 also ran for our varsity girls team. The girls walked away with their heads held high and a Region Runner-up trophy in their hands.

Boys Varsity: The boys team needed at least a 4th place finish out of region to move on to state, and they did just that. Senior Ben Archer led the team and crossed the line at 17:35. The pack running that has defined the team this season was true to form at the region race as well.  Junior Zach Davidson at (18:09), Freshman Carter Hales (18:12), Freshman Joseph Davis (18:20), and Freshman Braden Schmid (18:21) all came across the line within twelve seconds of one another. Following closely behind the pack were Junior James Morgan (18:42) and Freshman Noah Johnson (18:42). This young team has performed well this season and looks forward to participating in the State meet next Friday.

JV Girls:  JV Girls ran well and took 2nd place at the region meet. Four of our JV girls finished in the top ten: 7th place Junior Kelsey Crews (24:25), 8th place Freshman Ryann Brooks (24:37), 9th place Freshman Abby Wood (24:41), and 10th place  Senior Paige Huffine (25:08).  Junior Leslie Jaimes (25:11), Junior Ashley Eades (25:17), and Freshman Ashley Morales 25:21 finished out the team score.

JV Boys:  JV boys, our band of brothers, had a strong performance Wednesday on this region course.  Senior Ked Crossett (18:44) led the charge with a 7th place finish across the line. Sophomore Brent Warren (19:25), Freshman Brice Reynolds (19:36), Sophomore Luke Crossett (19:48), Junior Sam Warren (19:51), Sophomore Nathan Montini (19:54), and Junior Stewart Blankenship 19:56 all ran a good race as well and enjoyed top 25 finishes in a field of 76 runners.

The Varsity Boys and Girls XC teams will compete next Friday, November 1st at the State Meet in Carrollton, GA.
