Rallies from two deficits keyed the Buford baseball team’s 5-3 win Thursday

LILBURN — Rallies from two deficits keyed the Buford baseball team’s 5-3 win Thursday over Parkview, Class AAAAAAA’s No. 1 team and the No. 4 team nationally by MaxPreps.

Down 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Wolves got their first two batters on base when both Cam Wood and Ian Chafin were hit by pitches. An errant pick-off attempt moved Wood to third base, and he scored moments later on a wild pitch to tie the score 3-3.

After a walk to Cannon Goldin, a Parkview error on Madden Young’s sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Chafin to score the go-ahead run. Two batters later — with two outs — Ethan Murray’s sharp hit to left field scored Goldin for a 5-3 lead.

Damian Brown followed with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out all three Parkview players he faced. Brown earned the win with a two-inning relief outing, striking out six with no walks and allowing one hit.

Murray (2-for-4, double, three RBIs), Wood (1-for-2, run, hit by pitch), Young (1-for-4, run) and Goldin (two walks, two runs) led the offense for Buford (6-4).

Braden Burton started on the mound for the Wolves and pitched 2 2/3 innings before leaving with a 2-0 deficit despite not giving up a hit. Kyle Krause followed in relief and Buford remained down just 2-0 until the sixth when three straight singles from Goldin, Young and Nate Taylor loaded the bases. Murray’s double drove in two runs and tied the score.

Parkview went back up 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth on Greg Jones’ RBI single. Adrian Jimenez led off the Panthers’ sixth with a triple.

Parkview (8-2) suffered its second straight loss after falling 3-1 to Baton Rouge Catholic (La.) in the Perfect Game High School Showcase title game.
