Ayden Lockett staked Buford to an early lead with two big hits

BUFORD — Ayden Lockett staked Buford to an early lead with two big hits, including his first high school home run, and the Wolves held on for a 4-2 victory over Collins Hill in Region 8-AAAAAAA baseball on Monday.

Lockett’s bases-loaded, line-drive single with two outs in the first inning gave Buford (16-7, 10-0 region) a 2-0 lead that held until the fourth inning, when Lockett ripped a solo home run for a 3-0 lead. He finished the night 2-for-3 — the only two Buford hits on the night.

Cam Wood drew a lead-off walk in the fifth, and stole second and third base, setting up a sacrifice fly from Madden Young for a 4-0 lead.

Nate Taylor (6-2) struck out eight with no walks over six innings for the win, giving up two earned runs on six hits. Braden Burton pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save.

Collins Hill got its two runs in the sixth inning on RBIs from Ruben Balderas and T.J. Wilson. The Eagles were led offensively by Trae Burton (2-for-3, run) and Sam Schwark (2-for-3).

Kehlan Hendrix (five innings, two hits, four earned runs, four walks, five strikeouts) and Jordan Clarke (one perfect inning) shared the Collins Hill pitching duties.

Buford plays at Collins Hill in Game 2 of this week’s three-game series on Wednesday.
