JV Boys enjoy a first place finish at Apple Hawkins Invitational

Saturday, September 18th    The 5th Annual Apple Hawkins Invitational hosted by Apalachee High School attracted a field of very competitive schools this year, giving the wolves a chance to run against some of our region competition. All of our teams ran well against strong region XC programs from Shiloh, Lanier, and Habersham Central as well as non-region teams Jefferson, Archer, Loganville, and Norcross. 

Boys Varsity: Our Varsity boys placed 4th among 23 teams.  Freshman Colby Polhemus (17:48) and Junior Carter Hales (17:59) led the team with sub 18 finishes. Rounding out the team score and coming across the line only fractions of a second from one another were Sophomores Jesus Miranda (18:50.31), Ben Beardsely (18:51.11), and Noah Matthes (18:51.85). Also running for the boys Varsity team were freshman Alexander Zachman (19:32) and Cameron Kazienko (19:45). 

Girls Varsity: Our Varsity girls enjoyed a 5th place finish out of a very competitive field of eighteen teams. Sophomore Diana Plata (22:38) led the charge with Freshman Audrey Adams (23:25), Sophomore Hayden Bailey (23:40), Freshman Cayden Boyer (23:45) and Senior Madeline Matos running in a pack to finish out the score.  Junior Abbey Wood (24:00) and Freshman Alana Thomas(25:23) also ran for the Varsity girls team. 

Boys JV: Our JV boys finished with an exciting and strong 1st place finish out of seventeen teams. Junior Garrett Posey (18:43) took an early lead and finished 2nd overall. He was followed by Junior Noah Johnson (19:06) Junior Joseph Davis (19:30), Freshman Ben Wilcox (19:46), and Junior  Brice Reynolds (19:52).  

Girls JV: Running for our JV girls team were Sophomore Caitlyn Crews (25:42), Sophomore Savannah Dinh (26:13), Senior Leah Madsen (28:29) , and Sophomore Emmie Adams (28:32). 

JV Boys Open 

The JV Boys running in the open race brought home a 1st place finish out of 8 teams. Scoring for the wolves were Junior Braden Schmid (19:44), Junior Alex Hinkle (19:47), Freshman James Hales (20:09), Sophomore Johany Rendon (20:12), and Sophomore Rafi Basso (20:18). 

JV Girls Open

The JV Girls running in the open race brought home a 2nd place finish out of 4 teams. Scoring for the wolves were Sophomores Emily DiMaggio (27:55), Taylor Morgan (29:55), and Emily Nava (30:34) followed by Freshman Sa’Niyah Bacon (31:34) and Junior Kimberly Christain 33:17). 

The Buford Wolves XC Team will race next at the Winder-Barrow Invite in Winder, GA on October 2nd. 

XC sees strong start to the season at the Gwinnett County Championship

Saturday, September 11th      The Gwinnett County Championships serve as a showcase for the major running talent coming out of this county. With powerhouse programs like Mill Creek, Brookwood, North Gwinnett, and Parkview, the front-runners are both fast and fun to watch. With over 1400 county athletes participating, our Buford XC runners stepped up to the challenge and ran against some of the fastest runners in this state. 

Girls Varsity: Girls Varsity placed 11 out of 17 teams and saw stand out performances from some of our underclassmen. The charge was led by sophomore Diana Plata (22:48).  Freshman Addison Steinbrecher (23:23),  freshman Cayden Boyer (23:26), freshman Audrey Adams (23:49), and junior Madeline Matos (24:23) rounded out the score. Junior Hayden Bailey (24:40) and sophomore Cameron Perry (25:37) also represented the Buford Varsity Girls  in this very competitive varsity race. 

Boys Varsity: The boys team took a 12th place finish among a very competitive field of 21 teams. Coming across first for the wolves was sophomore Colby Polhemus (18:06) with junior Carter Hales (18:18) close behind. Sophomores Ben Webb (19:03), Ben Beardsley (19:07), and Noah Matthes (19:15) ran a strong race together and finished out the score. Also competing for the Buford Boys Varsity team were: Jesus Miranda (19:17), Turtle Kazienko (19:37),  Alex Zachman (19:39), Garrett Posey (19:41), and Joseph Davis (19:51).

JV Girls:  The JV Girls finished 5th out of 10 teams and saw many PRs of a minute or more! Scoring for the wolves:  freshman Alana Thomas (25:17), sophomores Cassandra Mayo-Sanchez (25:45), Caitlyn Crews (26:04), Savannah Dinh (26:18), and Emmie Adams (26:30). 

JV Boys:  The JV Boys ran a great race and placed 4th out of 13 teams, nearly upsetting a strong North Gwinnett team out of the top three.  Scoring for the wolves were: Junior Noah Johnson (19:50), freshman Ben Wilcox (19:53), sophomore Gabe Rodriguez (20:11), junior Brice Reynolds (20:12), and freshman James Hales (20:36). 

The Buford Wolves XC Team will race next at the Apple Hawkins Invitational on September 18th. 

Buford Cross Country runs well at Region and Qualifies for State Meet

JV Boys and Girls crush the competition and take 1st place at Region Meet

Region 8-AAAAAA Meet  Winder, GA

Saturday, October 24th, 2020    It was an exciting morning of PR’s and season’s best races for our Buford cross country team. This is the team’s first year moving up to the 6A classification, and we are so proud of the hard work that went into this race to see these results. Our JV boys and girls teams both came home region champions, and our varsity boys and girls teams qualified for the State Championship meet! 

Boys Varsity: Sophomore Carter Hales (17:59) fought from the front and ran a sub 18 for the team. Senior James Morgan (18:22) led the Buford pack that would soon follow.   Sophomore Garrett Posey (18:23), Senior Zach Davidson (18:25), and Freshman Ben Webb (18:26) rounded out the score.  Sophomore Noah Johnson (18:34) and Freshman Noah Matthes (18:45)  also represented Buford in the Varsity race. The boys finished 4th and will advance out of the region to compete at the State Championship meet. 

Girls Varsity:  The Varsity girls charge was led by Senior Caroline Snell (21:16) followed by sister Callie Snell (21:28)  and Senior Caroline Montini (21:29).  Freshman Cameron Perry pulled fourth for the team, shaving more than a minute off of her PR by coming in at 23:02. Senior Mackenzie Curry (24:41) finished out the score for the girls varsity. Sophomore Hayden Bailey (25:11) and Junior Madeline Matos (28:52) also represented the Buford girls’ team in the varsity race. The girls finished 3rd behind Winder Barrow and Lanier and will advance to the State Championship meet. 

Boys JV:  The depth of the Buford boys side is obvious when watching this JV team run. All five scorers placed in the top ten with the boys team finishing 1st place in the Region and creating a 35 point spread between 1st place and 2nd place. The charge was led by Sophomore Braden Schmid who came in first overall in the JV race with a time of 18:42.  Sophomore Joseph Davis (18:49) followed shortly after, and  8th grade Cameron “Turtle” Kazienko (19:00), Sophomore Brice Reynolds (19:32), and Freshman Ben Beardsely (19:41) rounded out the score. 

Girls JV:  The JV girls looked strong and brought home 1st place at the Region meet as well. Freshman Caitlyn Crews (24:23) led the team and placed 1st place overall in the JV girls' race. She was followed by sister Kelsey Crews (24:58) who took 3rd place overall. Freshman Emmie Adams (26:00) and Sophomore Ashley Morales (26:06) also enjoyed top ten finishes. Senior Ashley Eades (26:51) rounded out the score for the team and helped bring home the hardware. We are so proud of these girls and their hard work. This 1st place win was certainly well-deserved.  

The Varsity teams will compete at the GHSA State Meet held on Friday, November 6th, 2020 in Carrollton, Ga
